Introduction

Our proprietary Jona AI formulates recommendations based on our digital twin technology. When it comes to a particular association, our AI will calculate how taking a certain action will change a digital copy of your microbiome (specifically, the abundance of organisms) based on the current science. The AI will then reassess your association against this digital copy. If the action decreases your association to that concern, it will be recommended, prioritized by which actions are predicted to have the most positive impact on your microbiome.

Calculated Changes

The calculated changes of your microbiome as a result of following the recommendations can be seen in the following sections of the report:

Digital Twin

In this section, you can see how your health category scores are calculated to change as a result of adopting the recommendations. Hover over any dot for more information.

Association Changes

In this section, you can see how your health associations are calculated to change as a result of adopting the recommendations. This section will only list the health concerns that are listed under Your Goals.

Associations may improve, remain the same or get worse as a result of the recommendations. You can always customize the set of goals you want to work on to adjust the recommendations & changes.

Top Organisms

In this section, you will see the top 5 organisms (defined as the most studied) that are anticipated to change as a result of adopting the recommendations.

Your Goals

How are the pre-set list of goals determined?

At the top of your action plan, you will see a pre-set list of goals.

The list of goals will include any health concerns that were self-reported in the intake and found to have a positive microbiome association. If none match this criteria, your highest microbiome associations will be added as goals. The action plan is a collection of the recommendations across all of the goals in the list. You can click any goal to see which actions apply to that symptom. Similarly, clicking into any action shows how the action affects each related goal.

Customize your goals

If you would rather prioritize certain goals or add goals based on your results, you can do this by clicking "Customize Action Plan."

Your Recommendations

Your recommendations are a result of your goals, the breadth of actions that you'd like to incorporate, and your self-reported food sensitivities. You can customize all of these by clicking "Customize Action Plan."

  • Customization Levers

    • Goals: Add or remove goals (you can select from any health concern in which Jona identified a positive microbiome association).

    • Set of Actions: You can select between two options:

      • Focused: a short list of actions

      • Comprehensive: a longer list of actions

    • Food Sensitivities: You can add or remove from the list of possible food sensitivities. Based on these, certain food examples will be removed from your actions.

How are conflicting recommendations managed?

Conflicting recommendations are resolved using our food example feature. For every recommendation Jona makes, we have a list of example foods that we present to you in accordance with this recommendation. For example, if we recommended you to increase your magnesium intake, we would provide you with examples including leafy greens and nuts, which are foods rich in magnesium. Any example foods that contain nutritional elements that could affect your microbiome both positively and negatively are excluded. Similarly, any foods related to allergies or sensitivities you report having in your intake form are also excluded, even if studies show these foods contain nutrients that could help your specific microbiome. The end result is a list of foods to go along with each of our recommendations that is AI refined based on all other recommendations given in the report as well as your reported sensitivities.

How should I implement my recommendations?

Oftentimes the Jona action plan will contain multiple recommendations relating to each goal, potentially leading to a long list of food items to adopt or avoid in order to address all of your concerns with all the latest science. With so many options, it can be difficult to know where to start.

Before we provide some general recommendations on implementing your action plan, we want to stress how important it is that you make any changes to your lifestyle or diet under the supervision of a nutritionist, dietician or other medical professional. While the Jona results are all research-backed insights, your provider has a more complete view of your health and can determine if any of these actions may, for example, conflict with a medication that you’ve been prescribed. A medical or nutritional professional can contextualize these recommendations, considering other, non-microbiome related aspects of your health as well as ensuring these recommendations fit into any previous or current treatment plans you may be on.

For your action plan, we recommend prioritizing those recommendations related to the goals that you are most concerned about. If you have a particular symptom or condition that you would like to address, the recommendations given for that concern are a good place to start testing out your action plan. Each goal will likely have multiple recommendations each with several food examples.

A good approach when testing multiple dietary or lifestyle changes is to do so incrementally. Start by introducing 1-2 of the recommendations into your routine. Monitor your symptoms closely for several days or weeks for any signs of improvement or worsening. Keeping a journal of your symptoms often helps identify which changes have been the most helpful. After a period of time you can begin to introduce new changes to your diet and lifestyle, keeping the ones that seem to help and removing the ones that don't. Flexibility is essential here, ensuring that you are getting the most out of your Jona recommendations without unnecessarily restricting your diet.
